What does it mean to follow Jesus?

We were all created for relationship—with God, with others, and with ourselves. But because of sin, that relationship with God was broken. The good news is that God didn’t leave us stuck. He made a way for us to be rescued, forgiven, and made new through Jesus. The journey of salvation is more than a one-time prayer; it's the beginning of a restored life. Here’s how the Bible outlines that path:

1. Recognize Jesus as the Only Way

Everything begins with Jesus. He is not just a wise teacher or moral example—He is the Son of God and the only way to eternal life. Jesus declared,

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." — John 14:6 (ESV)

No one can be saved apart from Him. Salvation is found in no other name.

2. Admit Your Sin and Need for a Saviour

We all fall short. Every person has sinned—whether in thoughts, actions, or attitudes—and that sin separates us from a holy God.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23 (ESV)

Sin isn’t just bad behavior—it’s a condition of the heart. We can’t fix it ourselves. We need a Saviour.

3. Trust in Jesus' Sacrifice

Sin carries a cost—eternal separation from God. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, who took our place.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23 (ESV)
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 (ESV)

Jesus lived the life we couldn’t live and died the death we deserved—so we could live forever with Him.

4. Receive Jesus as Lord and Saviour

Salvation is a gift—it must be personally received. We receive it by turning from sin, placing our trust in Jesus, and asking Him to be the Lord of our life.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

You don’t need to have all the answers. You simply need to surrender your heart and trust Him fully.

5. Walk in New Life

Salvation is the starting point, not the finish line. Jesus not only forgives you—He transforms you. You are now invited to walk in freedom, to leave behind old ways, and to live a life that reflects His love.

“Neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” — John 8:11 (NIV)

With His Spirit living in you, you can grow in faith, live with purpose, and share His hope with others.

Now What?

If you've taken these steps or feel ready to do so, know this: God has adopted you into His family. You are loved, forgiven, and made new. Your next step is to grow in that relationship—get connected to a church, read your Bible, pray daily, and surround yourself with others who follow Jesus. This journey of faith is lifelong, and Jesus walks it with you every step of the way.
